What Are Borders and When To Use Them

I offer two different options for adding borders to your fine art print. What you’d like to do with your prints might determine if your print would benefit from a border. If you add a border, the printed image stays the same size.

Borderless (default): the image is going all the way to the edge. This option is perfect for when you need your print to match a specific size, e.g. for a special frame.

0,5 cm extra border: Your chosen image is printed to size, with an extra 0,5cm border added to the outside of the image. The border makes handling the delicate print is easier and creates a clean aesthetic that you might prefer.

Borders Help Protect Your Prints

Giclée prints are very high-quality, but you should still treat them with care to avoid tearing or denting them. Adding a small border around your art prints can also help protect them. For example, if you accidentally drop a print on its side, the impact would damage the side or dent the corner. With a border, accidents like these won’t harm the image itself, only the border. You’ll also be able to hold the print along the border, which prevents getting fingerprints on the image.

Borders preserve your prints: Not every print will fit a pre-made mount or frame you find at a craft or online store. Adding a border will help to avoid cutting off parts of the image.

When Not to Add A Border

If you plan to use a frame significantly larger than the print size, you’ll likely want to use a mount (the white space visible around the framed artwork next to this text). For the most refined look, it’s best not to add a border to the print, as this will help avoid any differing shades of white and create a seamless, sophisticated look.

Framing metal prints with floating frames is a stunning way to elevate their sleek, modern look. The floater frame creates a small gap between the print and the frame, giving the illusion that the artwork is suspended within the frame.

This style not only enhances the bold, vibrant colors and crisp details of metal prints but also adds depth and a polished finish. It’s a perfect choice for those who want a contemporary, gallery-like presentation that truly makes the artwork stand out while keeping the focus on the print itself.

Floating frames are available for all budgets. While my curated list focuses on more affordable options, you can always use your preferred search engine to find a local framer who would be happy to assist!

Hanging metal prints

Metal prints come with two hanging options and don’t need a frame. You can just unpack and hang them directly!

Gallery Aluminium Subframe

The pre-assembled gallery aluminium subframe is specifically designed for use with gallery hanging systems and includes two eye bolts in the rail that can be repositioned.
